These lovely dolls were bought in the tiny village of Hodka in western Gujarat, India. (Population about 2500)
The women and girls of the village make these dolls in their own image with the costumes and jewellery reflecting the traditional clothing of the village.
Look closely and you will see these beauties have a long black hair braided at the back, beaded necklaces, earrings, headband and nose rings. The fabrics are authentic from the region and the front panels of their dress are all hand embroidered, as are their facial features.
These ladies have a loop on their heads to hang from. and are about 22 cm tall.
More an artifact than a toy, these are not advisable for children under 5 years old.
