Embroidery is a rich tradition in the Kutch area, with over 42 distinct styles having been identified. These embroideries are practiced by 12 different communities.
This is a style of embroidery unique to the nomadic Rabari people of western Gujarat, India. Famed for their use of mirrors with square chain stitches, the Rabari also have a vast repertoire of lesser known stitches from delicate back stitches to playful applique work. Every motif is named and has a particular significance. Rabari women draw upon these resources to depict their changing lifestyles and traditions.
